The purpose of this study was to analyze Kaonasi, Yubaba and Jeniba, which were the characters in Miyajaki Hayao's animation film "The Spiriting Away of Sen and Chihiro," from the perspective of self-psychology and apply them as a basic data to the field of art therapy. In the self-psychological point of view, Kaonashi and Yubaba symbolize the primitive narcissism of idealization and grandiose self, the two axes on which self object is fulfilled. Jeniba shows the image of therapist who has mature narcissism by integrating the two axes in the net of self and thereby can be a self object. Identification and story reconstruction of the character's characteristics, selection, and process of overcoming conflict can promote healthy development of self. It can also serve as a creative and safe pathway to promote healthy narcissism by providing empathy, interpretation, use of countertransference, and transformative internalization. Therefore, the researchers made practical suggestions to apply “The Spiriting Away of Sen and Chihiro” to art therapy.
